Lakewood Baseball Club Current Weather Conditions

What is new for 2018?

  • Upgrades to Ft. Steilacoom Park including portable pitching mounds, 2 improved dug outs and outfield fences on all 4 fields
  • New age cut off date…“How old will you be on August 31, 2018?”.PONY Baseball is now utilizing the same age cut off as many other Youth Baseball Leagues.
  • New Bat Standards, PONY Baseball adopting USA Baseball’s bat standard.
  • PONY Adoption of MLB PitchSmart with specific “days of rest”
  • Introduction of the Olympic (6U-14U) and Cascade Conferences (10U-16U).

For years, we have heard from both sides of the ball…  “I just want to play baseball” and “I wish we could play more games against other teams”.  Well, we are working on that.

What are the “Olympic” and “Cascade” Conferences?

Olympic Conference is for players who are developing their skills and commitment to play baseball on a recreational level. All of our Shetland and Pinto teams are in the Olympic Conference as well as Olympic level teams from Mustang through Pony.  Olympic teams generally play a balanced schedule of 8-14 games (depending on age level) during the season, with practices generally starting in March. Games run from mid-April to mid-to-late-June (we do have to work around the rain).  Most games will be scheduled with Olympic level teams, Dupont Patriot League, and recreation teams that are still focusing on a more developmental baseball mindset of learning the game. Some games may be with regional teams or with Cascade teams.

Cascade Conference is for players who may have a higher commitment level of baseball, and for those teams (Mustang and above) wishing to retain 4 or more players from their previous year’s team. Cascade conference will allow the formation of long-term teams. Cascade teams generally play 14-16 games with the possibility of more games during the season, with weekly pre-season training starting as early as January, outdoor practices starting in March, and games running from April to mid-to-late-June.  Games will be scheduled with other Cascade teams, as well as a balanced schedule with outside teams, such as DuPont.  Additional games are also possible with many Puget Sound area leagues looking for games.  There are leagues begging for games.

As our players age up, the number of teams available to play does dwindle, and some travel is expected.

When are Player Evaluations?

There are no Player Evaluations if you enter the Olympic Conference.  After you register, you will either enter the blind draft or be randomly placed on a team (depending on age level).  The exception is if you are being “retained” by your previous team.  Each Olympic team can retain 3 players from the previous year.

Cascade teams may utilize a number of selection processes to create their team *(Some exceptions do apply).  It could be as simple as same school, played together for years, or we all like the Dodgers.

"How old will you be on August 31 2018?"

Eligibility for Divisions has been based on the players age as of April 30 of each year.  For 2018, PONY Baseball has moved the age date to that of August 31.  PONY has joined all the other Youth Baseball Organizations in utilizing the same age cut off date.

You can base your players eligibility for a Division by simply calculating what your child's age will be on August 31, 2018.

Are you "Bat" Crazy?

Bats…  What you need to know for the Bat rule changes for 2018.

In conjunction with USA Baseball and its other participating national member organizations, PONY Baseball has adopted the new USA Baseball bat standard (USABat)

  1. Effective January 1, 2018, with the exception of -3 (BBCOR certified), all other 2 1/4" and 2 5/8" barrel bats with a minus factor of (-5, -7, -9, etc.), must be USABat certified with the USABat licensing stamp on the bat in order to be used for league and tournament play.
  2. All 2 1/4" and 2 5/8" minus factor bats -5, -7, -9, etc. used in 2017 will be illegal to use in 2018.
  3. Tee ball bats are not required to undergo lab testing to receive approval under the USABat program. However, to be approved for play, tee ball bats must carry the USA Baseball mark accompanied by the following text: "Only For Use With Approved Tee Ball Bats." If you already have a tee ball bat you would like to continue using, all you have to do is purchase a USA Bat sticker directly from USA Baseball and place it on your bat.
  4. Tee ball bats manufactured after the new rule was adopted will already include the USABat Baseball mark.

We understand there is concern that there may be a shortage of bats for the younger ages that are not playing in Shetland Division.

We have positions to fill.  We no longer can sustain growth if every Board member is wearing 2-3 hats.  It is time to step up to the plate.
